How Does Riddle & Roam Work? Your First Mystery

If you are getting ready for your first mystery, you are probably wondering, how does Riddle & Roam work? The experience is self-guided, and the story leads you through a series of real locations. At each stop, you will uncover another part of your case, solve a password riddle, and find out where the Society is sending you next.

You do not need to prepare for the mystery ahead of time. Once you begin, you will receive what you need to start your investigation.

How Does Riddle & Roam Work When You Begin?

Your experience starts with an introduction to your case. The Society has a reason for contacting you, and this is where you find out what they need you to investigate.

Read through your first instructions with the people joining you. You will learn enough about the case to start forming questions, and you will receive the information that leads you to your first location.

From there, head out and let the mystery unfold.

What Happens at Each Riddle & Roam Location?

Each location is a chapter in the larger story. Once you arrive, take some time to look around and get settled. Your Society materials will reveal more about the case and give you something new to work through.

This is also where the real location becomes part of your investigation. A password riddle will point you toward a detail you can find somewhere around you. Maybe you notice it right away. Maybe someone in your group has been looking directly at it for ten minutes without realizing it matters. Both are very possible.

Once you find the answer, enter the password to unlock the next part of your mystery and discover where you are going next.

Can You Eat and Drink During Riddle & Roam?

Yes. Food, drinks, and time spent enjoying the locations are built into the way Riddle & Roam is meant to be experienced.

Your dossier may include Preferred Provisions chosen for that particular stop, along with Society notes about the space or something worth trying while you are there.

There is no need to rush through a location because you solved the clue. Order dinner. Stay for another drink. Talk about what you just learned. You control when you are ready to continue.

How Long Does a Riddle & Roam Mystery Take?

The timing depends on the mystery and how long you choose to spend at each location. Riddle & Roam is self-guided, so there is no host keeping you on a schedule or countdown clock pushing you through the clues. We believe a typical mystery should take around 3-4 hours, considering transportation and stopping to enjoy each stop.

When planning your outing, give yourself time to enjoy the stops as well as solve the mystery. Part of the experience is getting to explore the places the Society has chosen for your route.

What Happens When You Solve the Mystery?

Each stop gives you more information about the case. As you continue, you can start connecting what you learned earlier with the evidence you are finding now.

Your final location brings you to the resolution of the mystery. This is where you discover what your investigation has uncovered and why the Society needed your help.

Finishing your case also marks an important moment in your own story with Riddle & Roam. Your first mystery has been your initiation into the Society.
