The Distiller’s Catacombs
Second Stop
The solved riddle from the journal leads to you to believe the next location is where the Potionmaster tested his immortality project. Far below the busy streets, the Distiller’s Catacombs stretch quietly into darkness. The air is heavier here, sharp with alcohol and minerals. This was not a place meant for healing. It was meant for testing.
The Potionmaster likely retreated here once the shop above became too small and public, using the quiet underground space to push his creation further without interruption.
You search the back of the chamber, eyes scanning the clustered barrels. Once again, a symbol of tree roots catches your attention, stamped on a tucked away barrel. Peering inside, you find multiple tape recorders secured to the bottom.
Evidence
You press play. At first, the recordings are calm and precise. The Potionmaster speaks of healing, renewed energy, and growing strength.
But soon, another voice joins in, young, impatient, pushing for answers that don’t exist yet. Their conversations turn sharp, their teamwork slipping away.
As you continue listening, the results of the Elixir take a darker turn. Agitation replaces calm. Test subjects report hallucinations. One collapses, unresponsive. Another recording cuts off mid-sentence, leaving only a haunting silence.
Listening closely, you recognize that what once seemed promising has unraveled into something unstable and unpredictable, spiraling far beyond the Potionmaster’s original intentions.
Beneath the tapes, a heavy glass vial hides inside the barrel. The liquid inside won’t sit still, when the light hits it, it glints in sharp flashes.
The label reads: Distilled Wildfire.
Wildfire was prized for the passion it carried, the inner spark that gives life its drive and purpose. To preserve life, the Potionmaster believed he must also preserve the fire that makes someone want to live it.
You lift it with care. It’s the same kind of vial you uncovered in the Apothecary.
Together, the clues form a clear picture. The Elixir was unstable, dangerous. The Potionmaster wasn’t working alone, not at first. A partnership had formed with his apprentice, but was becoming strained.
Going back to the journal’s series of riddles, you suspect that wherever the Potionmaster hid next, he needed a secret location far from prying eyes.
