The Magician’s Parlor

Third Stop

The journal’s second riddle leads you to the The Magician’s Parlor, a place built to mislead. Cards flash, gears turn, and mirrors bend the eye away from anything real. The Potionmaster chose it because a place built on misdirection was exactly what he needed.

When his work grew dangerous, he sought help from those who lived by deception: magicians who could hide truth without destroying it. Surrounded by clever illusions, he tucked away what he no longer dared to write or record in front of the apprentice.

You study the room. One mirror stands out. Its surface is darker than the others, its reflection slow, as if something behind the glass is resisting. You watch it carefully. Then an image of tree roots appears at the edges, creeping inward. You reach out and press your hand against the glass. It gives slightly, like water, and the mirror fills with a memory.

Evidence

You see the Potionmaster at his worktable, notes gathered close. The apprentice barges in, shocking the Potionmaster, having found his secret location.

The apprentice insists that the Elixir is nearly finished, that its instability can be controlled, that stopping now would be foolish.

The Potionmaster hangs his head and admits he also ultimately wants to see the Elixir complete. He insists there is one more ingredient missing, and that he can’t morally ask another to go through more experiments.

The apprentice, mad with the desire for everlasting life, agrees to be the final test subject. The Potionmaster pauses but hands him the Elixir. The apprentice takes a large sip, and the consequences are swift and terrible. When the Potionmaster finds him collapsed and writhing in pain, instead of reaching out to help, he gathers the remains of the work and flees, afraid to face the consequences of his creation.

But what the Potionmaster didn’t see was that the apprentice survived. Knowing someone is searching for the scattered ingredients, you have little doubt who it is.

As the mirror clears, you notice something embedded within the glass itself. You move your hand towards the mirror and its surface warps around your hand. A magician’s trick?

You pull out a small vial. The glass is clear. The liquid inside is steady, holding light.

The label reads: Purified Mirrorlight.

Mirrorlight was valued for the clarity it brought, forcing a person to see themselves as they truly were. The Potionmaster had sought everlasting life, but only now was he beginning to see what his own ambition had cost.

Your visit at the Magician’s Parlor confirms the Potionmaster tried to hide his work from one person in particular: his own apprentice, the one who is after it today you are sure.

If the ingredients have remained safe for this long, whatever guards the final ingredient must be both clever and unexpected. You return to the journal to solve the final riddle.

The Society Rites

Complete the following rites as you enjoy your food and drink. Start with a toast, discuss what you believe comes next, and take a photo to commemorate your experience. These team-building acts move you closer to initiation.

Society Toast

Tap your glass three times on the bar or table, as magicians once did when a trick succeeded.

Raise it and say: “Now you see it.”

Then take a single sip: “Now you don’t.”

Society Photo Moment

Arrange glasses, napkins, or coasters like props for a magic trick.

Photograph the setup as if something magical is about to happen, with yourselves as the magicians.

Society Discussion

  1. Now that you know the apprentice is the one chasing the ingredients, does it change how you feel about him? Is he a villain, or just someone who got in over his head?
  2. The Potionmaster came back and found his apprentice collapsed. He could have destroyed the Elixir right then. Why do you think he didn’t?
  3. The Potionmaster trusted magicians to help hide his work because they knew how to conceal truth without destroying it. Who in your life would you trust to keep something truly important hidden?
  4. The Potionmaster erased his own memory of where he hid the ingredients so he could never be forced to reveal them. What would you be willing to give up to protect something you believed in?
  5. You are getting closer to the final ingredient. What do you think happens when all four are finally together?

The magicians are gone but their stories stay pressed,
In newsprint and frames on the wall with the rest.
A film where a sorcerer conjured it all,
Find its name among headlines that line up the wall.
