Society Mythos

The Apothecary Shop

First Stop

The Apothecary Shop once stood as a place of quiet trust. Society records suggest this was the Potionmaster’s earliest workspace. Its shelves were stocked with remedies meant to soothe common aches, carefully labeled glass bottles, and herbs dried and bundled with care.

People came here because the work and results were reliable. This was a place that promised relief, not miracles.

Here, the Potionmaster could observe the body over time. He could track what healed quickly, what healed slowly, and what did not heal at all. This was where his interest in life preservation first took shape.

Evidence

A small symbol of tree roots on the workbench drawer draws your attention. Beneath its false bottom rests a hidden journal, its cover worn soft with age.

The early entries speak of recovery time. Days of healing grew shorter. Strength returned when it should have faded. It appears the Potionmaster was recording trials, searching for ways to stretch life beyond its limits.

The final pages offer a haunting sense that the Potionmaster thought life could be extended… indefinitely.

You read on:
I believed I could preserve life without consequence. I was wrong. I could not destroy what I created, but I could ensure it would not remain whole.

I have returned it to four ingredients and scattered them deliberately. I do not leave this trail as an invitation. I leave it as a safeguard. If these measures are ever recovered together, let it be by someone willing to protect what I could not.

After hiding each measure, I erased my own memory of its location. I cannot be compelled to reveal what I now know.

My hope is simple: that the work remains divided, or guarded better than I was able to guard it myself.

As you close the journal, you feel a slight resistance in the spine. Carefully, you press along the binding until a hidden seam gives way. Inside rests a sealed glass vial. The liquid inside is clear and still.

The label reads simply: A Brew of Spring Dew.

Spring Dew had long been prized for renewal, making it the Potionmaster’s first measure in his attempt to help the body recover, restore, and resist the passing of time.

You ease the vial free and keep the journal safe by your side. You now hold the first ingredient, knowing there are three more to find.

You skim through the journal and find a series of riddles written in the margins. Could these be clues to the next ingredient locations?

The Society Rites

Complete the following rites as you enjoy your food and drink. Start with a toast, discuss what you believe comes next, and take a photo to commemorate your experience. These team-building acts move you closer to initiation.

Society Toast

Everyone holds their glass up to the light with both hands, as if presenting a rare specimen. Look it over with great suspicion.

Then, in your most authoritative apothecary voice, diagnose one ailment your drink could cure. The more ridiculous, the better.

Only after everyone has made their prescription may the group drink together.

Society Photo Moment

Before you drink, arrange every glass on the table from lightest to darkest, as if organizing samples in the Potionmaster’s workshop.

Step back and study the lineup. A good apothecary notices gradations others would miss. Once the order feels right, photograph the row from above.

This is your first act of careful observation, and the Society is watching to see if you got it right.

Society Discussion

  1. His journal ends with the suggestion that life could be extended indefinitely. What do you think he did in the days after writing that final entry?
  2. Someone is already out there chasing these same ingredients. Who do you think it is, and do you think their intentions are good?
  3. The Potionmaster chose to hide the first vial here, at the very beginning of his trail. Why do you think this place was so important to him?
  4. Have you ever actually tried a natural remedy, herbal tea, or folk cure for something? Did it work?
  5. Do you think there is something to natural medicine that modern science hasn’t fully figured out yet, or is it mostly just comfort and tradition?

Solve This Riddle

Observe your surroundings inside and outside, at this stop to reveal the answer.

Look not to menus, glass, or grain,
But to old words painted to remain.
A railway once chased western light
Name the ocean promised by its sight.
